Diamonds are a Girls' Best Friend ... or are they?

Yes, the above statement is true. I do love sparkly things ... they make me happy. It makes me happy to look down on my ring finger and see my "sparkly."

But, let's talk for a minute about our other friends: Pets, dogs to be specific. I've only had one dog in my whole life. Since we moved around to different countries, it was hard to have pets, especially dogs who need room to run and frolic. My first and only dog was named Callie. She was a beautiful large dog, mix between a German Shepherd and Husky. We rescued her from the humane society where she had been picked up from an abusive family. She was already a couple of years old when we got her. I was in third grade at the time, living in a house with a 1/2 acre backyard in Oklahoma. While my dad was on business the three girls (Mom, Nici, Me) decided we needed a guard dog. That's when Callie became a part of the family. She looked very similar to this:

(I did have another picture up here that looked way more like her, but they took it off the web, so I had to get another one ... she was more red in color than this dog.)

Callie was an awesome dog. Though it took her a while to get used to my dad, she was soon in heaven with her large backyard and a family to love her. We would put a harness on her and she would pull a line of kids on our rollerblades around the neighborhood for hours. She loved it! Four years later we got the news that we would be moving again. This time to South America where we would be living in an apartment instead of a house. We had no choice but to give her up. So, we found a good family with kids who lived on a farm to take her. I know what you're thinking ... that's what all parents say to their kids when the dog dies. But I know it's true because we all met the family who was going to adopt her from us ... SO THERE! I'm sure Callie is no longer alive, she would be WAY too old now. We never got another dog after that.

So, now that Brandon and I are house-hunting I'm sure a dog is in the near future. Though our cats will probably hate us for it, a dog just seems like the logical next pet. Of course our first dog will have to be a dachsund. Brandon LOVES THEM! He wants one like this:

But, a long time from now I will get a dog of my own. She will be pretty, cute, cuddley and blonde, just like Callie was. But, I want a miniature version of her. Don't get me wrong, I love big dogs, they make me feel safe and I hope to have another husky some day. But the dog I really want for my own so I can have a little lap dog would have to be a Pomeranian like this:

Look, she's smiling at you!!! So, I've been torn for the past few years. I love big dogs, I've only had a big dog before. But I would love to have a dog that snuggles with me, big dogs just can't curl up in your lap comfortably. So, here's my poll for all the people who happen to read this: Big dogs, or small dogs? Which ones are better?

It depends on the breed. Big dogs, I like labs and golden retrievers because they are calmer, and are smart. Little dogs, I like malteses, Bostons, and toy poodles. Really it depends on the temperament of the breed.

I think it depends on if you have a big enough yard to keep a large dog. I myself am partial to Great Danes, but will not get one until I have a HUGE yard. Until then, we will get a medium sized dog, a Cavalier King Charles.

i totally agree. i think it depends on the size of yard you have... or how available you'll be to exercise your dog every day. i have a black lab, that is small for her breed but still has a ton of energy. luckily, we have a park nearby and she also goes on runs and bike rides with us on the trails behind our house. good luck!

I was also going to mention that the Animal Planet website has a bog breed selector, you answer some questions and it will tell you dogs that match what you are looking for.

I think that I like small dogs better. I have one of each, and the small one is easier to travel with, eats less food, etc. You can also dress them!! The small one also cuddles every night in bed, while the big one has to sleep on the ground. Pomeranians are great...the toy ones are the best. Foxxy is 5 lbs, but keeps up with the big dogs with no problem.

I agree with you all, yard size is a factor with the type of dog we will get.

Kim - is Foxxy a Pom or is she a different breed?

She's a pom...but if you get one, you should really check on her parent's sizes because they can really vary. Our neighbor's pom was 20 lbs and foxxy is only 6!!

There was an article on MSN.com today about Utah license plates, did you see it?

pomeranians are ugly in my opinion . . . but that's just me. i would LOVE a big dog like a husky or something . . . but we have no yard. i really hate cats if they are bitchy (but i love kittens). my mother-in-law has a cat named Useless who is awesome. if i had a cat like that i wouldn't mind . . . but my old roommates had a jack russel and she turned me off of little dogs for life. little high maintenance, stressed out, crazy, yipper.
no offense, i hope.

Yeah, I just read it ... Utah's so conservative when it comes to stuff like that! Putting a gay rights thing on your license plate is NOT offensive to the general public. GET OVER IT PEOPLE!

Tabitha, no offense taken. All opinions are welcome here unless you attack me personally ... thanks for the input!

for what it's worth:

I've never been a fan of "yippers." I've had big dogs and small dogs in the past... now we have a hound/doberman/pitt (?) mix, adopted from the animal shelter. She is the best dog! And she's the perfect size, not too big, not too small.

The rest of my family all swears by miniature schnauzers (sp?).

good luck!
p.s where in Oklahoma? I lived in Mustang most of my life.

and when my dog was sent to "the farm" (because she was deaf AND blind) I didn't get it either, not until I was married! It's Okay to be in denial.

; )

We lived in Tulsa ... and I refuse to believe that Callie did not spend the rest of her days on a farm! Don't burst my bubble!
