Where is the line?

So I was faced with a rather difficult predicament this week. I was informed by my boss about a major change he wanted to make concerning one of our employees. I don't know why he told me what he did. It wasn't any of my business and I really didn't want to know. But this change would not only affect this employee's salary, but also benefits, position, etc. My boss planned to drop the news with no warning at all.

I consider this co-worker to be a friend. Not a close friend, but I feel like we're more than just co-workers. We've done things together outside of work a couple of times and we have fun at the office too. This is going to be devistating news. So do I say something or not?

And of course, I couldn't post without these:

He loves talking to his bears on the Pack 'n Play mobile. He'll talk to them, smile at them, and play face games with them. They are his friends.

Tummy time!

Wow that is a tough call. Honestly I don't know what I'd do in that situation. Probably drop hints then play dumb when she told me.

That sucks your boss put you in such a tight space.

Does your boss know that the two of you hang out sometimes? If so, do you think he told you first, thinking you would let her know and take the burden off of him?

i really don't know . . . but i do know that in office space he told his friends that they were getting fired so they pulled a scheme and made a ton of money before it happened . . . this could be an option?

Nathan is growing up so fast! And he's still a doll.

As for your predicament, I have no idea what to say. But if I think of anything, I'll let you know!

I'd have a hard time NOT telling my friend/co-worker, but at the same time, you don't want it to backfire on YOU.

It's probably one of those things that can't be helped, even if your coworker knows ahead of time what is about to happen--it would probably only add insult to injury knowing that you found out first.

But look at it this way, you've got plenty of time to think of those "gee, what should I say..." scenarios for when he/she drops the bomb about what happened. Right?

I would go to the boss and let him know that he put you in a really wierd position, that she is someone you consider a friend and that you're going to have to tell her if he doesn't tell her soon. He shouldn't put you in that position, unless it's your responsibility to hire and fire people like that. But- then again, I dont work in an office and I dont have your boss. Praying for you guys-

I think you have to leave it between your boss and the employee, don't drag yourself into the middle, even though you want to warn your friend.

And I agree with Holly, if you can, tell your boss what a tough spot he put you in...
