I took Thursday and Friday off of work so I could go work somewhere else through Saturday. Here's a few highlights of the three days of back-breaking work I endured:
~Heat, unbearable and awful heat
~Realized that I am, in fact, old
~Realized that I really look old after managing a group of fraternity boys who look so incredibly young to me. When did they all become so young? Why did they always look so intimidating and old when I was a freshman in college?
~Wondered why in the world, out of all of these fraternity boys, none of them knew (or would admit to knowing) how to break into a car.
~Locked my keys in my car.
~Had my faith in humanity decline a little bit after so many people complained about a free meal ... IT'S FREE - SHUT UP!
~Had my faith in humanity increase a little bit after so many people were beyond thankful for the free medical services they received so their children could register for a public school.
~Realized that standing on my feet for three days and being six months prego is not a good combination.
~Realized that my parents and my husband are wonderful and will bail out a bunch of strangers when the fraternity guys don't show up to finish their job.
~Was amazed that such a diverse group of women could come together, putting their own beliefs aside, just to help out some people who are less fortunate or down on their luck.
I absolutely love this event I worked at for the past three days. A while back, I mentioned here that I was stupid enough to lead this event for 2007 and couldn't remember why I said I would do it. I was reminded again this weekend:
~100% of the people who were screened for depression needed immediate professional help
~75% of the people who took an HIV test came out positive
~over 1500 children were immunized, given physical exams, and had sealants put on their teeth
~300 women received pap smears and breast exams (most of whom had never had one before in their lives) -- one of those women found a large mass in her breast and will have it removed at no charge
~Countless other people received medical, dental, and psychological help they needed that they would otherwise not be able to afford.
So all in all it was a great weekend, but I'm so tired and my body is aching in all sorts of different places.
Coming soon ... before and after pictures of our bathroom. This is my second favorite transformation in our house. I'm saving the best (the kitchen) for last.

And next year you will be doing all this with a baby! I'm sure he will follow your example and help out. Let's see, he'll be about eight months old and mobile, so he could be a messenger. Kind of like a carrier pigeon. I hope that doesn't make you cry - it's a cute image in my head!
No Kara, that didn't make me cry ... kind of a funny thought though.
what an awesome event! i applaude you! maybe when i am so wealthy that i can afford to travel whenever i want, i will come down and help you do it again! i would love to be a part of that!
What kind of event was this? How did you get involved with it?
