Decisions, decisions

Over the past year or so I have come to know a wonderful and talented lady named Ruth. We slowly became friends over the past couple of years because of some work she was hired to do for my company. She's fun to hang out with and always has stories to tell about her five kids. Ruth is an artist. She's not just a person who can draw pretty well, or paint pretty pictures, she is INCREDIBLE. If it has to do with art, she can do it: sculpt, paint, draw, carve, etc. etc. She has won competition after competition for her art submissions. She's just amazing.

For a while now I've been trying to come up with a way for Ruth to do a painting for BSC and I. I love art, especially original art. It is one of my life goals to own an original piece of art. And now I've decided that Ruth is the artist I want. Not only because I know her and consider her my friend, but also because she could do a custom piece for us that would mean so much more than just buying a piece off a gallery wall.

There is no way I could pay Ruth the cash she deserves for one of her paintings. So because I am her friend, she offered to do a trade with me. After several failed ideas for trade we have finally come up with something we both agree upon.

~First idea was for me to design a brochure for her ... great idea until we found out the cost of printing said brochures.
~Second idea was for me to play tennis with her regularly ... great idea until I realized that I don't have time to play tennis, all I do is work and sleep.
~ Third idea was to help her with her organize her house ... great idea until again, no time to do anything but work and sleep.

But now, after months of trying to find good ideas, we discovered something that will actually work! Ruth is looking for a new refrigerator, I happen to be selling a refrigerator. BINGO!

So now comes the hard part. What do I have her paint? I thought that a mural would be nice on the wall of the nursery, but we don't plan to stay in this house forever. I want something on canvas that can be framed and taken with me to every house we live in for the rest of our lives. So now that this opportunity has come up, I have NO IDEA what I should have her paint. Not even one clue. She can do absolutley anything and make it look wonderful. She's a perfectionist when it comes to her art, so I know whatever I ask her to do will look amazing.

So, my question to everyone here is: what should I have her paint? Most of you know me pretty well by now. You have seen my decorating style here, and here and here. What would fit in with my sense of style and our personalities?

I wish I could post pictures of some of her work, but it would give away too much about my place of employment, and I just don't want to do that. But I will tell you about one sketch she did for her sister of Mikhail Baryshnikov* in his dancing years doing a grand battement** with no shirt... let's just say that it is yummy.

So, I'm waiting for all of your clever and creative ideas. Come now, waste no more time. Please tell me what my painting should be.

*Mikhail Baryshnikov is one of the most famous male dancers (of ballet) in the world. Critics say that he could jump higher and more gracefully than any other dancer before him despite his shorter stature. He also played "The Russian" who dated Carrie on "Sex and the City".

**This is what a grand battement looks like:

Is there a place or an event that is special to both you and Brandon?

Have her paint your nursery when you find out what you are having.

i would have someone take a picture of bsc's hands on your belly later. then, she can paint the belly and hands. if she leaves faces out, your left with just the hand of a father, touching his baby through his greatest worldy love, his wife.

perfect for the nursury.

i suggest a "family portrait." if you don't want your actual personages in the piece it can be representative of family love . . . something sort of abstract . . . i dunno . . . geeze . . . i need to start painting again.

i think she should do a depiction of your AWESOME restaurant experiences. that would be lovely. or or or she could paint your shoe collection...all those gorgeous heels captured FOREVER!

I was thinking about this for a while, and this is what I came up with:

Herpaps she could paint a narrow, intimate landscape of some rocks or something a little more "rugged," a place where you would expect briars to grow. Then, seemingly out of place, she could paint a rose or unexpected floral plant that is delicate and unexpected. I thing it could represent the difference in your personality and Brandon's personality.

What do you think?
